Coach’s Tip – Where Are Your Shoulders?

Have you noticed what your shoulders are doing when you move the bar? Pay attention because they make a BIG difference!

Stabilizing under the bar starts at either the top or the bottom of the chain. The top of the chain is the shoulders. When you are setting up for a lift you must pull those shoulders back and down! Do not pass GO. Do not collect $100. Simply pull them back and down and you are on your way to stability.

Lifting the bar without those shoulder blades in place leads to the camel imitation. Have you seen that? Or perhaps the turtle imitation resonates more closely for you. Both those critters have a rounded back! That is NOT what we want when we put the spine under load while moving the barbell.
