Cold and Flu Season, Antibiotics – and You!

By: 0

In this season of sniffles, sneezes, wheezes and coughs, we are often left with few choices to help get us through our illnesses, especially when considering how little time we Americans are allowed for recovery and recuperation. So, many of us turn to over-the-counter cold and flu remedies (NyQuil, Robitussin, Bourbon), and many of us are encouraged by our physicians to also take antibiotics. Now, I’m not saying that antibiotics are a bad thing – I’m not a physician or a pharmaceutical researcher. But I know my how own experiences have gone with being on antibiotics, and how long it takes me to recover from them. In addition, there is a plethora of research out there that discusses the more long-term and wider-range of effects of antibiotics – check out these links here, here, and here. So what do I suggest? Well, to keep us healthy and happy, even conventional medicine suggests regular exercise and a nutritious diet. And if you’re already a believer in CrossFit and the Paleo lifestyle, you’re well on your way. However, a few other lifestyle choices are important to include help keep your body strong: getting plenty of rest, dealing with and/or eliminating sources of stress in your life, and taking time to enjoy life and have FUN! So, let’s resolve to cut our illnesses off at the pass (or at least make an effort to lessen their severity), and go into this cold and flu season as Paleo warriors against disease!
