The Ketogenic Diet

By: 0

There are so many diets and fads out there these days that it can be hard to know what is right for you. Each Monday we talk about nutrition. Sometimes we present a recipe. Other times we break down a way of eating. So this week let’s dive into the Ketogenic Diet, or Keto for short.

Keto is an extremely low carb, high fat diet, and the absence of carbs puts the body into a state called ketosis. Once the body is in ketosis it burns fat for fuel instead of sugar. Since many of us are walking around with an excess of fat, this can be an effective way to lose weight!

One of the things we really appreciate about Keto is that you get to eat beautiful fresh and healthy foods at every meal. As with all these nutritional things we discuss, it’s important to source the healthiest foods possible. Buy organic when you can as that’s almost as good as health insurance these days.

The tricky part with Keto can be getting started, or getting the body into ketosis. You need to first eliminate ALL the foods that digest as sugar, such as pasta, bread, alcohol, ice cream, cake, croissant, cookies, chips, etc. Often times the body is addicted to these foods, (unbeknownst to us) and there are withdrawal symptoms like lethargy, head aches and even fever. The withdrawal period can last anywhere from a few days to two weeks. But once you get past this stage you become a fat burning machine!

We have people in our gym community who have lost substantial weight with Keto, and they feel good and are thriving. If you are considering Keto and would like to speak to someone who has actually done it then please reach out to Beth in the gym and she will make the connection.
