Strongman Training Comes To WCCF

By: 0

Strongman Training is the foundation of functional fitness. Since the dawn of time man has substituted athletic competition for fighting as a means to safely determine group structure and organization. In order to be prepared for both sport and war they trained by lifting heavy stones.

The sport of strongman has some roots in the Viking traditions. The Norsemen were known throughout Europe and the Middle East as huge and fierce warriors. This reputation is slightly less accurate, as fishing and farming made up the bulk of their day to day activities. To ensure that everyone on the fishing boat actually belonged, a village established a stone series of increasing weights. To achieve a position on a boat, and to get better work, the viking would need to lift a certain stone to prove their worth. Stones could be labeled weakling, useless, half and full strength. According to lore, to earn top billing a stone would need to weigh a minimum of 341 pounds and then be lifted to hip height. Even today, this is a challenge for many a trained strongman.

We are bringing Strongman Training to Wine Country CrossFit! We will host a four week series, and participants will be exposed to the fundamental elements including yoke and farmer carries, logs, stones and truck pulls. Regardless of where you fare in the stone lifting competition you’ll still have a place in our gym!

October 22nd is only three weeks away, and spaces are limited. Reserve your spot now by signing up HERE. Cost for the Strongman Series is $100 for WCCF members, and $125 for non-members.

The series will consist of eight one-hour classes held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30PM. Strongman classes will be held 10/22/18 through 11/14/18.

We are honored to have Coach Freddie Espinosa lead the way. He is a national level Strongman competitor and an international level Mas Wrestling and Armlifting (Grip Sport) athlete representing Team USA across the country and the globe.  He is proud to have spent tons of hours “under the bar” and “in the trenches” of competition.

Reserve your spot now as class size is limited.
