How Can I Do More Pull Ups?
Over the last week or two, I have had a few people ask me how they can get more strict pull ups. In case, you missed it, Emilie did a great write up on a concept called “Greasing the Groove” which she titled “Greasing the Bar”. If you have not read that yet, it is worth your time. There is one overlying principle however that will get you doing more strict pull ups, and that is: do more pull ups. Personally, I went from 9 to 16 (and a half?) in about a month, by simply doing them three times per week. Simply enough, I would jump up on the bar and do 3 sets of as many reps as I possibly could (I would estimate my rest at 5 mins or so). One of the keys to this is to perform an absolute maximal effort in each attempt. Don’t drop off when it gets uncomfortable, or your hands hurt. Turn your hands around when you think you can’t do one more, and make sure that two more happen. If you are truly putting a maximal effort into your strict pull ups for 3 sets, 3x per week, you’ll certainly see a gain. Now get on the bar!

Funny that you write this the same week the New York Times publishes an article explaining why women can’t do pull ups! Ridiculous! Thanks for the plan- makes sense!!!
