Wellness Wednesday – Thumbs Around The Bar
Our focus today is thumbs around the bar. When you go up on the bar to do a pull-up, a bar muscle up, or even just practice your kips, we want you to place your thumb around the bar.
“Oh, but it’s so much more comfortable when I cup it instead” you might say. And yes, we agree it takes a bit to get used to it. But we are taking the long view here, so read on to learn the two reasons why this is important.
First, when your thumb is around the bar there is less of a chance that you will fall or slip off the bar. Convinced that will never happen to you? Accidents happen. When we least expect them. I’ve seen it before. More than once! Let’s just build the habit now.
The second reason that thumbs around the bar is important is for your shoulder health and stability. Cupping the bar allows you to hang with internally rotated shoulders. Thumbs around the bar allows for a more stable, externally rotated position. For a visual on this important wellness tip please watch this video from our friends over at MobilityWOD.
