Matt Naumann started working out here last September. He showed up daily to the 8AM class with his good attitude and big smile. His work ethic stood out, he made substantial gains, and participated in The Open last month. When I mentioned that he might be over-training by coming in five days a week all he said was that he used it to manage stress. He didn’t let on that the stress was managing was his wife’s terminal brain cancer. Only by the middle of The Open, when his mother and 3 year old daughter came in to watch him one Friday night, did he let on what the stress was, and that his wife was reaching the end of her struggle. They had been dealing with her illness for the past two years, and a cousin suggested last year that he start CrossFit to deal with the stress. Matt reports that “… in life’s darkest moments I was comforted by the motivation at WCCF to strengthen my body which ultimately helped me strengthen my mind.”
Sarah passed away on March 2oth. The following is an excerpt from her obituary:
While obituaries offer details, they entirely fail to capture the essence of a person’s soul, the person’s life contribution or the manner in which a person lived. Sarah’s life cannot be measured by mere words, nor honored through such limited description. We can share that Sarah lived her life with courage, strength, grace, warmth, passion, humor and love! Although Sarah enjoyed many delights in life — great friendship, travel, food, wine, Pilates, music and art — nothing brought more joy to Sarah’s life than being a mother, and a wife. This was Sarah’s dream, and when realized, brought a light and radiance to her being that allowed all of those in her presence to witness unbounded joy. And, it must be noted that Sarah expressed all of these rare, remarkable qualities, even in life’s darkest hour, while enduring the unimaginable.
Matt likes to work hard, and these are his favorite movements. Let’s all dig deep for Sarah.
-Beth
