Great Sources of High-Quality Meat and "Bring Sally Up"
What with the Paleo Challenge in full swing, sometimes one of the hardest things to do is to find really high-quality meat at reasonable prices. Here are some ways that I manage my own Paleo Budget:
- When shopping, look for the specials and buy those cuts. Ask your butcher for advice about cooking them if the cuts are unfamiliar to you.
- Same goes when buying fish – try some different kinds, especially the small fatty ones – mackerel, sardines and anchovies are VERY good for you, though they may take some getting used to. They’re also pretty inexpensive!
- Ground beef is a really versatile ingredient, and the great thing is that with the Paleo diet, you are good to go on buying the higher fat-content grind – which is generally a little less expensive!
- If you have a freezer, buy a whole animal or part of an animal from a rancher. The following sources are ones that I’ve used personally and been really happy with:
- Beef – Freestone Ranch and Stemple Creek Ranch (see the infograph below for the some specifics on why grass fed beef is better for you!)
- Pork – Hudson Ranch and the folks at Bud’s Custom Meats in Penngrove
- Chicken – Hudson Ranch and Riverdog Farms
It sometimes takes a bit of creative shopping to get the best quality food at the best prices. But I really do believe that when you regularly eat such high-quality food, you’ll notice the difference in how you feel and perform, and won’t want to go back!
