February Member Of The Month: Nicole Collins
Last year when Nicole walked into the gym it was like a fresh wind blew through the open doors and left us all more alert and engaged. Already an experienced CrossFitter, her performance is improving in front of our eyes. Some months ago she eliminated alcohol from her diet, and now the inches are falling from her body. We hope you enjoy learning a bit more about this live wire!
- When did you start CrossFit and why?
I started at Wine Country CrossFit a little over 6 months ago, but I started doing CrossFit over three years ago at a gym in southern California. I started here because I needed to go to a gym that makes me feel like I am being held accountable! I enjoy the drive and the push that I receive from the coaches and from the other members who I have formed friendships with.
- What time of day do you come in?
My work schedule is always changing, half the week in the am and the other half in the evening… Saturday morning is usually my favorite class!
- What is one type of movement you hate and one you love?
Well I hate and love pull ups, they have been a real struggle for me, but last week I was able to do strict pull ups and it honestly made my whole week.
- Any big goals set for the next year?
Handstand push ups with no matt and better coordination. The coordination thing has always been a real struggle for me and that just adds to my dorky character.
- Name an athlete that inspires you and why. (Does not have to be a CrossFitter)
I grew up competitively swimming and playing water polo. Every year i would wait to watch the olympic water polo ladies and they are always an inspiration to me, so freaking bad ass.
- Tell us one fun fact about you.
I used to live in India and Hong Kong, I worked with an artist in SF on a large team where we would fabricate massive sculptures out of glass, most the size of Boeing 747’s and install them overseas where they had been purchased by hotels and private homes.
- You were left on a deserted island. What one food and thing (i.e. book, music player, etc…) would you want to be left with you?
I’m cheating and saying a kindle with an endless battery and some seeds to grow veggies and then lets hope I get really good at catching animals.
- How has CrossFit helped you in sports? Life?
The people of CrossFit and at this gym in particular help to keep me motivated which keeps me coming back. Wine Country has a really special group of people and I feel lucky to have found this gym. I tried every gym in Napa when I moved back until I finally found this one and I have to say it was worth the wait. Being sober has also added to my passion for this gym!
- How have workouts changed for you over the years?
I am getting stronger and I can see this on a weekly basis, not being able to do pull ups and now I can, not being able to do handstand push ups and now I can. I’m excited to see what the future holds.
