September Member Of The Month – Beverlee RabanalSeptember Member Of The Month - Beverlee Rabanal

Beverlee is a St. Helena native who now lives in Angwin. The drive down-valley pales compared to the benefits she receives from CrossFit.  In  2008 she got involved with Aids LifeCycle.  The event is a 545-mile bike ride that raises money to support the HIV/AIDS community.  It started as a personal challenge but was inspired to do all she could to help as she met more of the community and was touched by their stories .  She has been riding ever since, and is planning her 8th ride in 2018! “I did a metric century a few weeks ago and could already tell that Crossfit is helping me get stronger. I’m excited to see what my riding looks like in the future.”
When did you start CrossFit and why? I started in early March 2017, just as the CF Open was starting!   I’m not much of a self-motivator. I like to be pushed and held-accountable for my work. I was looking for a gym that would be both challenging and fun, and I won the lottery with Wine Country CrossFit.
2. What time of day do you come in? I am a 6:00am lifer!!!
3. What is one type of movement you hate and one you love. Running is, and will probably always be, the bane of my existence.  As much as I hate it, I know it has to be done, but I am far from being good at it.  My favorite movement are cleans – power cleans, hang cleans, squat cleans.  I don’t want to say I cherry-pick, but I never miss a workout that involves cleans!
4. Any big goal(s) set for the next year?  I’d love to be able to get kipping pull-ups and Double-Unders down.  They are definitely a work-in-progress.  I also want to do the workouts at the RX weight/movements as much as possible.
5. Name an athlete that inspires you and why.  (Does not have to be a CrossFitter) I grew up around volleyball and followed Kerri Walsh from when she played at Stanford to her Olympic Championships.  I love her work ethics and the great attitude she has on and off the court.  I’ve always thought she exemplifies what a good athlete should be.
6. Tell us one fun fact about you. I’ve ridden my bicycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles seven times!
7. You were left on a deserted island.  What one food and thing (i.e. book, music player, etc…) would you want to be left with you? Is there pizza delivery on this island??  Because I could eat pizza everyday of my life.  And I would need to have my pillow. I can be comfortable anywhere as long as I have my pillow.
8. How has CrossFit helped you in sports? Life? Crossfit has helped me develop more defined goals for what I want to get out my fitness routine.  In my younger years I never worked out.  As I got older I would go to the gym because I knew I should, but not really get much out of it. With Crossfit, there are always challenges to be faced and goals to be met. And there are people that not only help you get there, but also want to see you get there.  I’m always excited to see what the next day’s workouts are going to be (Is it 8 o’ clock yet?!). Most importantly,  I never leave a workout in a bad mood.
9. How have workouts changed for you over the years? I used to joke that I would get winded walking to the mailbox.  At 36 I’m now in the best shape of my life and I really enjoy learning about what I can handle, both physically and mentally.  I actually crave the physical activity now.  I hope that I can still be this active when I’m 80!
